The Feast Goes On (TFGO) is intended for readers (and chefs) who have an interest in Jewish food, the food’s history, and in the various cultures and nations which this food originated from. Although TGFO content caters for a specialised field, the preparation of traditional Jewish food with a diverse heritage, the publication can be of value to a wider readership. For example, food historians, those with an adventurous pallet (and enjoy rich food), and those who have friends who can cook and who are looking for something different.
TFGO is the second of two publications that began as a joint venture by a group of Jewish chefs in Sydney, Australia. These chefs decided to use their publications, The Monday Morning Cooking Club and The Feast Goes On, as a means to preserve their families’ favourite recipes, which had been passed down through the generations, and as a means to share these recipes with the wider community. The group also set out to inform their readers of the personal and cultural values of their chosen recipes, so as to add context to the recipes and to introduce their more inquisitive readers to the diverse culinary styles of the Jewish community.

In this regard TFGO has been successful in achieving the group’s goals. This publication has a high production quality, which can insure the resource’s longevity, the publication has presented a broad and diverse range of recipes for all occasions (and appetites), and the recipes’ histories provided by their respective chefs (authors) help to connect the food to its cultural heritage.

The recipes featured in TFGO are divided into ten chapters / categories with ten recipes per chapter. The authors have presented their recipes in a simple, precise and easily understood manner with an informal writing style. Each of the recipes is presented with a brief background, a list of ingredients, a cooking guide and serving number. The only evidence of emotive language is seen in the chapter and recipe introduction sections. However, this is intended to work in favour of the publication’s readers by promoting the recipes and further research into a particular culture’s culinary history.

TFGO’s additional content includes a variety of topics which include the authors’ biographies, the group’s history and foundation, their publications’ purpose, the recipes selected for different times and events,  and a glossary of terms for those who are unfamiliar with particular Hebrew / Yiddish phrases.

TFGO works well as a stand-alone resource as the publication contains an abundance of food for different occasions, or as a set when combined with the first publication, or as part of a larger cooking library. As there are thousands of recipes for Jewish food, and multiple methods of preparing the same meal, no one book (or series) can hope to cover all of them. However, the Monday Morning Cooking Club have provided a detailed introduction to the more popular recipes of a Jewish community, and to their heritage.
