Smaug Unleashing the Dragon (SUD) is intended for a diverse gathering of readers who share common interests. Such reader groups include those who have an interest in JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit or its film adaptation, or in computer animation for film, or in graphic art and concept design (for dragons). The latter reader group is of particular importance as SUD covers the creation and development of a creature character called Smaug, and also Smaug’s appearance in the second installment of the Hobbit film trilogy.
The Desolation of Smaug Movie Guide (DSMG) is set out to provide its readers with an introduction into the planning, creation, and production of the second Hobbit film. DSMG also aimed to provide an account of how particular scenes were set up and recorded, how the main characters and creatures were created and, in some cases, filmed to depict substantial size differences, and how the film was planned with concept sketches then developed into a finished production. DSMG has successfully achieved these objectives and is hard to fault as a publication. Although the hardback edition would be preferred for a publication of this size (found onAmazon and Book Depository).
The Art of Porco Rosso (TAPR) is designed to provide its readership with a descriptive, though pictorial, account of the Porco Rosso film’s background, storyline themes, characters, production, and preparation for release. TAPR also provides the readers with an extensive collection of high quality animation cells used in the film, along with samples of the film’s advertising media. In effect, TAPR plays the roles of a professional art book, and of a detailed movie guide.
