Expelled From Paradise (EFP) is an art book related to the Japanese animated science fiction film of the same name. This art book features animation cells, character and vehicle designs, and concept sketches from the animated film, along with artists’ notes and character / vehicle backgrounds. EFP is primarily orientated towards fans of the animated film, and to fans of the Japanese science fiction genre, although the publication is also of value to readers interested in cell-based animation and computer generated graphics in general.
A majority of the artworks presented within EFP comprise of character and vehicle concept sketches and costume designs. EPF begins with a collection of half or full page high quality art works and animation cells to showcase both the artists’ talent and the film’s production quality. EFP then presents the reader with a series of sketches and artworks for each of the film’s main characters. In this section the film’s main characters are provided with a single or double page spread to showcase their draft sketches, character poses, and costumes.

The following vehicle (or mecha) designs and sketches are presented in a similar layout. Both the character and vehicle design sections of EFP are accompanied by author and artist’s notes. These text elements provide the readers with an overview of the characters and a brief description of the sketches. EFP concludes with an artist interview transcript discussing the film’s production and its storyline.
Please note, the publication’s text is predominantly in Japanese calligraphy as it is orientated towards a Japanese readership.

Overall, Expelled From Paradise is well suited for its purpose and intended audience; presenting a collection of high quality artworks and concept designs to a mainly Japanese Science Fiction readership. EFP is also of value as an art collection or reference guide to readers who have an interest in animation, graphic design, character sketches, and CGI.
